The most insidious affliction that Satan has perfected sowing in the human soul is heedlessness. Heedlessness is what whispers, "The sun is still rising; there's time," yet never warns, "The night is already chasing the sun, ready to blanket the world in darkness, and soon, you will be left to dine in the shadows." It is heedlessness that draws your attention to the brightness of the morning but conceals the encroaching night; that lets you see the cool water but hides the warmth that will slip away; that reveals the comforting shade but obscures the fire that burns beneath. Even our earliest ancestor was ensnared by heedlessness, leading to his downfall, for it barred him from doing what would have spared him from misery and disgrace—if only he had not been heedless.
