Updates to Pricing Conversion Tools

With today’s Steam update, we’ve made two improvements to Steam’s pricing conversion data to help developers price games in 37 currencies and 4 region groups worldwide:

  • We’ve updated our pricing conversion data to better reflect current market conditions around the world.

  • We’ve also added two new conversion methods to help developers choose how to price games.

New Pricing Conversion Data

In order to sell games to customers worldwide, Steam supports pricing in 37 different currencies and 4 region groups. As always, how you choose to enter prices for your game is entirely up to you.

We know that many developers aren’t familiar with all of these currencies and even how many digits each should have, and so the tools we provide can assist in finding prices that fit within expectations of various markets around the world. Given that market conditions change over time, pricing data is periodically updated to help developers maintain an appropriate price for their products on Steam. These new values are live today, along with some additional options which are detailed below.

You can learn more about how pricing works on Steam in our pricing documentation.

Three conversion methods

Steam now provides three different conversion methods for you to choose from. Check out the About Regional Pricing page for an interactive tool that demonstrates how each of these these methods convert to all supported currencies for each major USD price point.

  1. Exchange Rate Conversion - This method uses a simple currency exchange rate at the time indicated on the page.

  2. Purchasing Power Conversion - This method uses public data about the average purchasing power of customers within a given country and/or region.

  3. Multi-variable Conversion - This method uses multiple data sources for each currency, including local purchasing power, the expected cost of comparable entertainment goods, and exchange rate  (this most closely matches the method that was previously presented in the pricing tool).

These conversion methods are intended to help developers make informed decisions about pricing and to choose the option that best fits their goals. Some developers may choose to use a mix of methods for their games or manually set prices for one or more currencies.

For a quick overview on using the new conversion methods, please check out this tutorial video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKiuS0Iysdo

What should I do next?

No need to make any changes today. Whenever you next choose to update any prices for your products on Steam, you will find the new conversion methods available to help. If you are curious, you can always visit your pricing dashboard in Steamworks to see how each conversion method would apply to your products.

Please note:

  • Price increases generate a 30-day cooldown on discounting for all regions (even if you are just increasing the price in a single currency). Some developers choose to wait to make price changes until after a discount, when the product is already on discount cooldown.

  • Valve develops and sells games on Steam as well. We'll be updating our own game prices as part of this update.

If you have feedback or bug reports on the new pricing tools, please let us know in the comments, or by sending our team a message. And as always, if you need to contact the Steam team for help on any technical or business topics, you can reach us any time via the partner support tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is Valve changing or editing my prices?

A. No. Just like always, publishers set their own prices on Steam. Your prices won't change unless you manually submit and publish new prices.

Q. What if my game doesn’t follow any of the pricing conversion options?

A. That’s fine! Your prices are between you and your customers. Whether you follow or diverge from any of the provided conversion options doesn’t impact any of our store visibility systems.

Q. How do I change my prices?

A. Users with pricing permissions in Steamworks can access the pricing dashboard

For assistance, you can find details in the pricing documentation

We also made a tutorial video, available in the documentation pages and also on YouTube, for a visual demonstration of the new tools.
