For what it is, mostly an okish-looking walking simulator with very light and simple puzzles, it's far too performance-heavy.
It doesn't look bad, but it often drops massively whenever the second world is shown.

This game is extremely empty, and since its gameplay is regularly so minimal, you typically just walk…… wasting time.
I don't mind this kind of game normally; I have played some games like it, but such an empty-feeling walking simulator shouldn't feel this extremely stretched for time. It gets even worse if you play as the second playable character, Thomas, as his parts really should have been entirely skippable. It's just nothing going on remotely challenging or interesting for such long stretches of time, that the pinnacle of gameplay is holding the block button to deflect tentacles as the primary game loop. … wasting time.

The story isn't good enough, since it's kind of badly told and ill-hearted, to justify spending any time in this. It repeats itself again and again just so even the dumbest possible person understood its very simple story … wasting time.

This game doesn't give you a good story, no gameplay to speak of … I don't want to be mean, but you need to give me something. Being sometimes somewhat pretty and interesting to look at doesn't justify 8 hours of my life for me. Even at Sale, it's not worth your money; there are far more enjoyable ways to end up wasting time.

The Medium seems like an interesting Silent Hill inspired psychological horror, however, I'd probably would look somewhere else, if you need to scratch that survival horror itch.

It has interesting premise - woman with powers to interact with a spirit world, goes to an abandoned resort in search of the truth. Also the whole dual split screen world mechanic sounds like it could make for an interesting experience. It had promise, then after finishing it, i can safely say that it's just another Walking simulator - one that drags.

I didn't necessarily hate the story, but there are plenty of elements that come off as half baked, or questionable. Like attempts at symbolism á la Silent Hill, or one of the poorest excuses for ambiguous ending I've seen in a while. It could have been something compelling, but just didn't land.

The gameplay is what makes this game kind of a slog - Being a walking sim isn't inherently a bad thing - What Remains of Edith Finch is a good example of that style done right - However, The Medium is walking simulator with identity crisis where gameplay feels like an afterthought with annoying stealth sections and puzzles that, while some are okay, are often way too easy and The whole split world mechanic also isn't utilized as much as it should be - they should have played with that idea a bit more. A good chunk of a game feels like a mind numbing dead air.

Perhaps devs tried to get out of their comfort zone only to fall back. It's better than some of their earlier games like Layers of Fear, but it's still not great. I wouldn't say it's awful - visuals, are pretty good and Akira Yamaoka and Arkadiusz Reikowski's score is amazing - it was also awesome to hear Yamaoka's frequent collaborator Mary Elizabeth McGlynn on few of the tracks. There are highlights, but the final product reeks of wasted potential.

Good game.
