"John is my favorite medieval ruler. John was famed for his piety and his remarkably mild and just reign. How many rulers, ancient medieval, or modern, have possessed the simple decency of beautiful John? Faithful to his wife and to his people, sincerely dedicated to their welfare, building hospitals and such for the vulnerable. He is considered an exceptional example of a moral ruler, at a time when cruelty was the norm. For this reason, he has been called the Byzantine Marcus Aurelius. John was an unusually admirable person to rule any state."

I think his nick "Beautiful" is what we today would call proto-post-irony :mamiyasociety: Or just refers to his soul, like 'beautiful on the inside' ;)

Oh I don't know anything about this conspiracy, I'll look into it :natasha_eye: considering his beauty though, I'm not sure from where exactly did @Julian fished this^ quote... From what I read, he was considered rather ugly, also described as rather short and remarkably dark skinned... Perhaps this artwork is too flattering? Or perhaps it's not, I'm not an expert by far. I'm just an amateur history nerd :SirCatface:

@Crusader
Hmmm... wasn't Anna Comnena also involved in a conspiracy to overthrow him? Iirc. Poor guy, when his immediate family doesn't appreciate his beauty :tearymayu:
