Slay the Spire is great at giving you the same feeling as playing chess while retaining the ability to blame the RNG when you lose

I have been mostly happy with Crusader: DE, and in principle, I am happy to receive additional content for it. That being said, Firefly should be ashamed of themselves for charging money for this. For the last 20+ years, the greatest challenge out of the CPU opponents has been the Wolf, with no one else really coming close. We've all beaten the Wolf a thousand times, so you would think the Definitive Edition (and especially DLC like this) would be the perfect opportunity for Firefly to introduce a greater opponent, someone to finally dethrone the Wolf as the most threatening lord. Sadly though, it appears that Firefly has absolutely no desire to give us an actual challenge, no ambition for anything greater, and the result is this absolute shambles of an opponent duo. Personality-wise, they're nothing remarkable, a far cry from the iconic villainy of the Wolf or the Caliph, or the noble badassery of Lionheart or Saladin. Gameplay-wise, they're a complete joke. I really do not understand Firefly's thought process here. The Trader is just kinda forgettable, whatever, a middle-of-the-road pushover opponent like many others in this game. But the Canary is what really grinds my gears. Pray tell, WHO on Earth ever asked for a second Rat???????? Arguably weaker than the Rat, even! Really, what were they thinking?? That would have been on the very, very bottom of my list of requests for new DE content, and they're asking money for it??? What a waste of a DLC, what a waste of two opponent slots. A similar criticism can be applied to the Crocodile, but he at least didn't cost me 5 bucks.

And of course, none of this is helped by the abysmal opponent AI in this game. Sure, the Trader has a good economy, but he will just keep sitting on hoards of gold like Smaug in his mountain and never make more than 200-300 units at a time, not even if the Extreme troop limit is enabled. This applies to all the lords in the game, actually. Many of the CPU lords still can't interact with the game's systems properly. Like, for goodness sake, give us anything to work with. UCP solved this stuff literal years ago, but Firefly still somehow can't get it right. I pray to God the Lioness and the Sergeant in the upcoming DLC are going to be at least somewhat challenging, but this is an extremely discouraging start. Now, something I can actually praise are the animations and voice acting, which are mostly pretty good to excellent! But, sadly, this is the least important aspect of a CPU lord. Important, yes, no doubt, but the least important. It's nice to have, certainly much better than the abominations of SHC2, and I give all the props to the Firefly character designer and voice actors, but it's not going to make me overlook the fact that the opponents are trash. Yes, this is a cheap DLC, but again, the fact that Firefly charges money for this is a disgrace and a genuine insult to their playerbase.

This soundtrack isn't the music that plays in the game. The compositions are pretty much the same, but for some reason, the OST version is completely remastered, I would assume in an effort to make everything sound more grand, orchestral, "epic". Which, in pratical terms, just means putting a bunch of unnecessary reverb and volume/bass boost on everything. On occasion, there are some new instruments scattered about as well, but these don't necessarily hurt the listening experience, it's just the terrible mastering. The intimate simplicity of the in-game music is kind of ruined because of this. Shame.

The Definitive Edition didn't fix or update quite as many things about the original Stronghold as I'd have liked, and the new content is somewhat lacklustre. Nevertheless, if you want to play the original Stronghold, this is absolutely the version to get. It's not a modern game, and it doesn't pretend to be, for better and worse. But, looking at it as impartially as my nostalgia-tainted self can manage, this is the best version of Stronghold 1 available.
