As someone who was wasn't born in the 80s but have always been captivated by the art style of this era this was really fun!
I got into DnD via 5th edition, and have heard many a tale from my DM who played the game during 2ed edition that the game back then was more grounded compared to the "heroic adventurers" of current editions as he puts it.
So, it was really interesting to be offered a little bite of something that pays tribute to the past!
Very much looking forward to seeing where this project goes!
Already send the steam page link to my DM, I am SURE he will be delighted!!

This game ♥♥♥♥♥ hard and I mean that as genuine compliment.
Like Lies of P the devs, these folks have become honor students of the mechanics and pacing of Soul Likes.

The game is defiantly more Bloodborne than Dark Souls when it comes to the speed and pace of combat, with brush of Sekiro and a tasteful touch of some "Trickster" like dodge mechanics from Devil May Cry.
Where it DOES echo Dark Souls 1, is in it's use in healing mechanics.

Healing is limited and to be used wisely, which is something I have personally been missing from the genre.
While the level design doesn't reach the heights of DS1, there was more than one occasion were I couldn't help but crack a smile at a well placed enemy ambush and well placed shortcut.

Per other Souls games, the mechanical aspect of the attacks you preform are not deep, the true meat of the game is learning a boss' attack pattern.

Where the game will undoubtedly split the waters is regards to dying to bosses.
Every-time to a boss in this game, you gain souls.

I didn't uitlize this feature, as I see the mechanic as against the spirit of the genre, but at the same time I respect the dev team bringing new ideas into the space.
My guess as to why they implemented this feature is to discourage soul farming.
In addition, I imagine for people who do not have much time to play video games it's a welcome mechanic, as even if you fail you are rewarded for the attempt.

These days I do not pre-order games...But this one is defiantly making me reconsider.
I suspect that this labour of love will not receive game of the year. but it MIGHT get best action game of the year and I will be outright offence on the devs behalf if it doesn't at-least get a nomination.

If you are on the fence, try out the demo for yourself.

Baldur's Gate 3 manages to do what other DnD inspired CRPGs have failed to accomplish: To simulate what it's like to play a session of Table Top RPG.
- From the Dungeon Masters narration.
- The over the top backstories of the main cast that are grounded by their deeply ingrained flaws.
- The internal party roleplay and all the drama and camaraderie that comes with it.

Each of the 3 Acts of the game is rich with compelling narrative, powerfull emotional moments, sprinkled by moments of comedic leavty without sacrificing the integrity of the story and it's characters.

With all that being said I do have criticism, but I want to stress that this criticism comes from a place of love and admiration.

Act 3 of the game is simultaneously the most breathtaking aspect of the experience while it also containing the most short-comings.
These short-comings are minuscule when comparing BG3 to similar RPGs, but within the game's own scope of ambition it's a most unfortunate outcome.

While Baldur's Gate (the city) was brought to life in a most spectacular fashion, it's clear that the nature of the beast meant that the multiple stories and threads that the developers wished explore couldn't become fully realized.
It didn't help that 2 new companions where introduced in this act, which I presume took away attention to further develop the stories of the companions you have been traveling with for the majority of the game.

WIth all of this being said, if you are a fan of DnD5e or the Forgotten Realms, this is a MUST play experience.

Not recommended.
Another potential gaming masterpiece ruined by cooperate greed.
