In a better year, Dying Light 2 would be incredibly forgettable. Everything here is clearly a watered down experience compared to the first game, the city is less interesting, the writing is somehow worse than before, there is for some reason a less focus on the intensity of the zombies, and honestly just waters down the whole experience to a Far Cry -esque formula that really isn't worth all that much attention. I would say that if you are dying for a new AAA experience, than you could go worse, the combat is still pretty engaging (despite the removal of one of the most fun rag doll systems I've played), and so is the free running. But if you can excercise a little patience I think this game will end up being outclassed by any game that comes out later this year, and I really think this will not age well and be seen as a net loss of identity for the Dying Light franchise.

Its definitely not worth full price, and its worth mentioning that the game is pretty buggy in this state a little less than a week after release. I trust they'll fix it but I have a game breaking bug that has soft locked me from preventing, which is baffling for a main story mission under the circumstances. I'll say that you should progress the story as soon as you can if you decide to play because my issue is related to unlocking a windmill hub before the game expects you to, and one of the NPCs for the main mission is uninteractable. Other bugs I've had haven't really been a huge deal but this is really just confusing how they never had a playtester try to unlock everything before progressing the main story.

I trust that techland will continue to support this game, so I suggest you check in after a few months and see if things have changed. I realize I am probably in the minority saying not recommended, but I really see the signs here and this is just not worth it right now.

I used to mod my original copy of the game (digital DRMless version from the Atari store, not sure if that exists anymore lol) to get it to work at 4k, that seems to not be a thing here which is somewhat confusing. Either way this game is a classic and I'm glad its back on steam. If you played this as a kid its probably worth the $20 but if you wanna try it you're better off waiting as its still not ideal on modern Operating Systems (Cursor flashing is a known issue, you'll still need to do CMD alterations to get billboards to work) In other words, the game is almost in an unaltered state as I assume it was with the old version. And it seems that this is a result of legal issues being sorted between Atari and Frontier.

HEADS UP THIS IS A POSITIVE REVIEW FOR THE HUMBLE CHOICE (formerly monthly) AND IS REVIEWED AS SUCH. I DON'T TAKE PRICE INTO ACCOUNT.

This is a nice series (5) of classic arcade games that are tied together by a pretty muted story. This game is pretty short, but its highlights are definitely the art and music (especially the intro beat 'em up track). the games are all pretty fun (I especially love the ninja runner) though they are all a little too short in my opinion and suffer from a ramp in difficulty that I felt was a little on the frustrating side (though I admit I am not great at old games like these). it just felt a little like they ramped up the difficulty in the 3rd or 4th stage of each minigame to keep you playing a little longer. I would have even prefered padding but it isn't a huge issue. The game is probably a good 2 or 3 hour experience worth it for the music alone.

This game reminded me a lot of Valiant hearts (a game I haven't played) however I don't think that this game suffers as much from the issue of ludonaritive dissonance as that game had. This is a puzzle adventure game (though none of the puzzles ever left me stuck) and it tells a decent, if somewhat predictable story. The main gameplay is making small decisions and finding collectibles. The game has I think 7 endings and most of them aren't disappointing and are quite easy to get to. My only problem with the endings is the "good ending" requires you to make a decision quite late in the game that I don't think is very in character or really makes sense.

Overall I liked the game, but the coolest things about it are the history you can look at if you get all the collectibles and the art style/cool shader technology. The rest is just okay.

Also worth noting that the controls aren't great and the collision is pretty buggy, nothing game breaking and I never crashed, though there is one scene in the german's house where looking at his daughter in the kitchen causes the game to tank. that was the only dropped frame I ever experienced.
