I recently got nostalgic for Escape Velocity Nova, and I started searching to see if anyone had made a remaster when I stumbled across this.

I spent two hours chopping logs into planks. I got mauled to death by a bear while chopping down trees into more logs. 11/10

Helldivers 2 has managed to strike a delicate balance with its microtransactions where you feel a sense of accomplishment saving up enough in-game resources to unlock new content, without making it feel like a pay-to-win grindfest. You definitely can pay real world money to buy cosmetics and warbonds if you're impatient, but you can also earn enough through regular play that you never feel like you have to.

The game has had some hiccups along the way in regards to balancing and bugs, plus a fiasco involving registering for a PlayStation account that was met with widespread backlash, but the devs have corrected course several times, taking player feedback very seriously.

The core gameplay loop of running around a planet, dispensing justice to enemies of democracy and accomplishing missions is fun solo, with friends, or even random strangers, and the metagame of the galactic war make the always online aspect feel justified.

Had a PTSD flashback while constant artillery barrages had me trapped inside a building. 10/10

I didn't like how much labor time it took cremating corpses after fending off large raids, so I established a pig farm to turn long pig into regular pig.

Jumping around like a flea with a sword is a lot of fun. Too bad there's no level editor, though.

I decided to check out this game during the free weekend because the concept seemed intriguing. I got booted out of the singleplayer campaign midmission because the For Honor servers were unavailable. Thanks for convincing me not to buy your game, Ubisoft.
