I want to like this game, but why is it purposely designed to be such a slog?

Why is there a currency that is only dropped by certain enemies? I was in a situation where I was a single rosary bead short of unlocking a fast travel point. explore explore explore, get pigeonholed into a boss battle I didn't expect, lose everything, backtrack backtrack backtrack through several areas to finally get what I need.

This is one example of a repeated traversal problem encountered in Silksong. It is just one quality-of-life patch away from being made great.
