(free weekend review)

Seemed like a really promising game at first, played the first free trial they did back in the day. Build your own space ship or astroid base. Those features then were lacking, but it was simple and understandable.

Now the game has become so super overcomplicated. Basically no tutorial, or what tutorial is there, is incomprehensible. Is unfortunate because the premise of the game is cool. It's just too complex, it's like a job to learn how to play the game.

I also played a (suggested) scenario to maybe try to get into it, but it was rather confusing as well, and long and kinda tedious/boring too...

This would in principle also be totally my kind of game, but the fact that all this is so off-putting for me should say a lot to those that know me well.

So.... I used to own this game.. and I still own it kinda, but now if I wanna play multiplayer I have to buy the game again....?

It's not like it visually looks any different as well... So they basically just re-released the same game, discontinued features in the game I own, and now I have to arbitrarily purchase it again to play multiplayer and buy new DLC? When did paradox buy microsoft exactly? .... And then become even worse as well....

Great game, and I feel like most of the negative reviews are a bit harsh.

Will it succeed to hold your attention for many runs in a row? I don't know. But not every game needs to have infinite replayability. It's okay to play it, finish it, and move on to the next game.

But the combat is really fun and the music slaps. Enough to at least give you a very fun first run. The game's got great humour on top of that, and lots of fun references without being corny.

The UI is straightforward and simple in all the right ways. The graphics are detailed and stylistic.

Literally the only negative experience I had so far was a vehicle autopathing into a lane where it would hit a wall and be destroyed, even though the vehicles it meant to circle around were also moving away in the same direction. Which, tbf, I could have micro'ed a bit better anyway.

If you can be bothered researching if you would enjoy replaying this game lots, you can decide to buy it without a discount. Otherwise, you can wait for a sale and pick it up cheap.

Free weekend review

EA app:
- Forces you to install EA Play or w/e: while when you launch from Steam, the store is at least disabled, the store is still installed and the points below apply
- Cannot choose install location for the app itself, nor their anti-cheat
- Comes installed with annoying settings turned on (launch on start-up, automatic updates, background processes+updates even when the app is closed), including sharing usage data without asking for it (pretty sure that's illegal...)
- Does not close when you hit the close button (nor give option for this)

FIFA:
- What the hell are "hospitality settings"
- Clunky, unintuitive UI control (right-click to skip things??)
- Horrible port to PC in terms of menus, example: 3 options in a list, and moving to the top or bottom one will automatically scroll the list, meaning you can barely use your mouse to click through things. Cursor also jumps back to the centre of the screen every few seconds. And cursor position also blocks you from using arrow keys to navigate the multiple options.
- Also just horrible menus, all the gamemodes n ♥♥♥♥ are a complete mess and it's super unclear where everything is.
- Using mouse for movement control during a match seems like a logical thing to do instead of a joystick, since WASD can only move you in so many directions. However this means that whenever the opponent keeper has to kick the ball, your off-screen player will be forced to run into the screen and out of position because your cursor is forced to be in the screen... (This can be changed at least, but then very limited movement controls)
- Direction of passing/shooting is inaccurate as ♥♥♥♥
- Poorly optimised
- Randomly crashes in (training) menus
- FIFA says "hurrdurr we support women's football strongly" -> yet 23 is the first game with women's football at all, and has incredibly limited options for teams. Customisation for female players (length+weight, for instance) is also stuck to the same min-max settings as male players. Women can apparently not be shorter than 5'3", and median height of women is 5'11" apparently.
- No women's career options (honestly the women are better off not being in this garbage product though)
- Which brings up the next point: if you put the game on English, you're stuck with the imperial measuring system. If there's even a setting to change this, it's hidden somewhere.

Was hoping for a full board/official rules version of Duel Links, basically. While this is technically that, and the mechanics for playing the game are quite smooth, it lacks the personality that Duel Links had/has. There's no characters from the series/stories, no voice lines to accompany fun plays or iconic cards, no story quests related to the series, etc.

The UI can get frustrating quickly, with there being a tiny bit of loading between interactions with the UI/menus, for instance going back to main menu. This feels slow and annoying, and it's ridiculous that it's even there (Duel Links had this too, I guess it's an engine thing...). Returning to main menu should not leave me unable to click anything for 1-2 seconds, while I can already see it right there.

The game also desperately needs some way for more old school fans to be able to limit their deck and queue - or set rules in lobby (just for against friends or public, I don't mind) - to only cards up to a certain generation. I absolutely hate the disgusting 10 minute turns with newer cards, where you're just waiting for someone to play half their deck in turn 1, only to then have already won if you don't have a good counter in your hand, or for them to forfeit instantly once you then clear their board with 1 card in your first turn. It's utterly boring, and any link, xyz, pendulum and whatever other new crap they came up with is totally uninteresting to me. Not a single old school deck is viable against these bullshitty newer decks.

Since PvP is completely out of the picture for me due to this, singleplayer is the only content I can enjoy playing. And while some of the stuff is quite cool to play through, essentially they're just glorified tutorials for certain archetypes or kinds of summoning. I don't know if they just quickly put some story together or if this is actual Yu-Gi-Oh! lore, but most of it is very superficial and not really interesting story-wise.

I am aware there's a separate game for playing through all the story stuff from the series/anime, but I mostly just want to play with friends with those older kinds of decks with iconic cards. And am, probably in vain, still hoping this game will eventually allow for that too. At the very least allow for sorting the cards/collection based on chronological order of being distributed.

I can't be arsed playing Duel Links anymore, because it's way too limited after having played this a few times. But I can't be arsed playing this either, other than the occasional checking for changes and playing a couple rounds in singleplayer, as it lacks the soul that Duel Links at least somewhat had.

Oh and Tag-Team Battles. Give. VS AI with a friend pls. Don't even care if it's balanced at this point. Thanks.
