But if you refering to the panoramic photo you share from the game Firewatch. That is consider a pano. You have a wide screen so actually it is easy for you to take a panoramic image without having to use a program.

1) Panoramic shot is a well known method in the photography circles by taking shots in a horizontal way, positioning the camera/lens vertically, so the photo taken is in a vertical way instead of horizontal way. Taking photography in that way captures more resolution to the overall panoramic photography once the stitching is done with the scene when combining three to four, depending the shots taken to capture the nature or architecture.

2) Remember a panoramic is the same deal as your normal way of taking pictures, with or without foreground, everything is the same when it comes to the rules of high angles, horizontal angles or low angles and even the rule of thirds and so forth but in this case, you have to think in a panoramic way. If you google panoramic photography with foreground, you will often see, panoramas with flowers, rocks rivers as the foreground middle ground and then the background depending on the image.

3) So basically, to create panoramas you need to just take three to four pictures depending the scene and how much you want to take small chunks of that scene wether is from left to right and vice versa or bottom to top. Hope this answer some doubts. I use hugin in my case remember that there is that pin topic Loreschilla did regarding the guide and a program and info on how to do it. :)
