AJ, Get Blacklight Retribution. It's a awesome Free to play FPS, If you like that genre.

Spiral Knights is free to play (you basically have to pay to play more than a certain time per day) if you want a fairly casual RPG. Other tha that look out for the sales :D

Hi AJ, most free games are the free-to-play (w/ in game purchases ie upgrades, etc). What I do is look for games on sale. I got Dead Space 1 and 2 for $5 each. Awesome games work great on Steam. I just got addicted to ArmA Military Sim. (not for COD or that style FPS players). It is more realistic than Americas Army which is US Army Official Game. Oh and that is free. AA3 is I think the only other true "free" game on Steam.
