If there's any chance of a free weekend this year, I'd say our best chance is this August, as Valve will officially turn 30. So perhaps they'll give us one as part of a celebration, although it's never guaranteed.

There's no schedule. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. But it seems to be happening once every 2 years or so, but I cannot confirm it's going to take place again this year.

It lasts for a weekend, as the achievement describes.
