Operation Overhaul Dev Blog #2: Gameplay changes, weapons, vehicles

We’ve obviously been working on this update for a while and only started communicating in earnest about it more recently. In all that time, we've never really sat down and fully explained what exactly the update is all about and some of the major changes coming with it.

Two big parts of our intentions with Overhaul are to improve gameplay and visual quality. In this specific post, we will be explaining some of the gameplay changes (all subject to change in upcoming playtesting) as well as showing off updated art on weapons, attachments and vehicles. We’ll cover some of the other things in the update in later dev blogs.

Gameplay

Class weapon pools

We believe a large-scale military class based shooter like ours is best balanced and most fun when weapon availability reflects class role. We saw a lot of the feedback Battlefield 6 received regarding open weapons on all classes, and we wondered if we couldn't improve on our own weapon availability ourselves. The current version feels a little arbitrary, so we are refining it in Operation Overhaul.

Movement rework

Drop-shotting nerf
- When players attempt to drop shot, their recoil will now be effected making it harder to maintain their target
Standing, crouch and prone now have new animations involving you reaching down with your hand and vice versa
- When a player is prone there is now a limit to how fast you can swivel around. Once a player reaches that threshold their turn speed is significantly reduced
Air strafe reduction
- When attempting to immediately turn around your character will encounter a slight pause rather than an instant shift in momentum
New sprint feature
- An increase in speed will engage after a few seconds of sprinting in a straight line and continue until stopping sprinting or turning too much
Previously players would vault OVER objects, reducing their speed and evasion, in fights. Now players will mantle on top of objects rather over objects which has also been sped up
We also implemented a fix for player snapping and sliding when wiggling their mouse

Attachment rebalancing

All attachments have been fully rebalanced to allow players to refine each weapon’s combat role to their liking.

Sniper bolt rebalance

Bolt A - increased bolt speed
Bolt B - increased weapon sway, bolt while ADS
Bolt C - increased velocity, slower bolt time, cannot bolt while ADS
Bolt D - slower bolt speed, faster ADS, auto bolt cycling
Bolt E - fastest bolt speed, cannot bolt while ADS, slower ADS time, reduced velocity

Grips

Vertical grips will now focus more on vertical recoil and first shot kick
Angled grips will reduce more horizontal recoil
Hybrid grips will focus on multiple areas of the weapon
Handling grips will focus on reload speed, ADS time, and draw speed

Barrels

Unlike the current version of BattleBit, range is now something you will gain with barrel attachments. Now, some barrels will now give a better drop off. Example: pairing a carbine with a long barrel will increase its range and velocity but with a penalty to weapon handling such as slower ADS speed and draw speed.
More suppressor options

Weapon rebalancing

We have also introduced some new gunplay mechanics that were not present in the previous playtest nor the public version.

Recoil recovery
- Helps make tap firing more viable and helped us trade visual recoil for real recoil
- Gives a more natural feel to shooting and is the standard in most FPS games
- Any movement you make to compensate the recoil gets subtracted off the recovery so you never double recover. If you drag your mouse down, the system wont over-drag you, it will maintain your position.
Recoil smoothing
- Recoil previously ramped up immediately in a single frame, now it’s spread out over a short span of time
- This is one the main way we fixed our visual recoil[x.com]. Not only with the hipfire, but the 4x scopes as well
Magazine packing has been reworked. Previously you would take the two least-filled partial mags and combine them Now it take the fullest incomplete mag, and tops it off using the most empty mags available.
One full target mag = 1 packing operation / animation, even when it takes multiple source mags to fill it up. This makes it easy to understand that pressing the pack mags button will give you one full mag as result, if possible.

Weapon identity

Weapons are better distinguished from each other with more distinct stats and serve clearer gameplay roles.

Weapons now have “engagement ranges” in which they deal their maximum damage
- SMG’s and PDW’s for close ranges (0-35m)
- Carbines and ARs for medium ranges (35-70m)
- BRs for medium/long ranges (70-100m)
- DMR/Snipers for longer ranges (100-300m+)
The FAMAS will now be burst only rather than full auto and semi, but with a great fire rate and better damage.
The M249 now has better recoil control the longer you fire it, and also has a higher rate of fire
The Vector is now unique ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️
DMRs ramp up the recoil the faster you shoot, so slower shots will be more precise
Sniper rifles have been adjusted: you either have a great handling sniper rifle, with lower damages or higher damage and lower handling.

TTK

As we have previously mentioned[c],[/c] we want people to have a reasonable amount of time to react to being shot at without shooting itself feeling sluggish or like you’re slinging foam darts at your target. We tried a new TTK that addressed this problem in our November playtest.

However, with that TTK we did not take into account the average player accuracy and the average engagement distance. Now we have accounted for that, and the threshold is reached faster than the previous iteration. This TTK sits in-between the old playtest and the current version of BattleBit, creating what we feel is a good middle ground.

Remember: These are an active WIP and will require player feedback in the next OPEN playtest

Class changes

Each class will now have unique perks to better fit their role as well as reworked health pools. Reworked health pools help with better class balancing and role refinement. A support player is more likely to be on the frontline laying down heavy fire while a recon stays back and stays more discreet.

- Faster reload
- Faster ADS
- Enter increased sprint speed state faster
Medic (100hp)
- Faster bandaging
- Drag downed players faster
- Allies are revived with more health
Support (125hp)
- Placements are placed at full health
- Build and unbuild placements faster
- Increased maximum health
Engineer (100hp)
- Nearby enemy gadgets are highlighted through walls
- Explosive indicators are visible at longer ranges
- Enter vehicles and switch seats faster
Recon (90hp)
- Increased spotting duration
- Switch between weapons faster
- Enemies you spot are outlined briefly

Preset Loadouts

Added 3 preset loadout options (can be renamed to your liking)

Spawning

You can spawn on teammates that are within objectives that are contested
- We originally had spawning on contested objectives very early (pre early access release, maybe even like 2020), but people would get spawn camped so it was removed. In Overhaul there will be a better spawn system where you spawn on teammates and you can’t be spawn camped at a point.

Changing Squad points into Field Points

In our previous playtest people were confused about field points and how they even worked. Field points are a replacement for squad points. The problem with squad points was the dependency on other people and was a shared pool of points. This is an active WIP that we are still iterating on but here is a run down of what we would like to see from this system:

Field points are a reward for teamplay
Field points are team focused not squad focused. You are able to help your entire team and earn field points
Field points are YOUR own personal points. They not shared by your squad
Field points have been rebalanced and scale better for items like placements
When spawning on a teammate that is on a contested objective, it will not cost any field points (it did in the playtest, but that was a bug)
- Spawning on a squad mate outside of an objective WILL cost field points

Weapons

Weapons have seen huge changes, not only in terms of gameplay balancing but also audio improvements, proper shell ejection and higher model quality with little to no impact on performance.

With the vehicle rework, the goalpost for us on the art side was to further develop our entire style away from the “toycar-like” appearance. We wanted to fully utilize the benefit of custom textures while still keeping triangle counts in a low ballpark to not impact performance. The model should, like the sound does now, clearly visually indicate an interactable feature and present itself as an active threat on the battlefield.

The updated models are work in progress. Please note that the camouflage you see is not necessarily our final choice for a pattern or coloring for the vehicle, just something we're using for now as part of the texturing process.

Speaking of vehicles: we’re still working on vehicle physics since our last dev blog. We’re trying a wider turning radius that matches better to the current version and giving vehicles a little more weight.

Conclusion

In later dev blogs, we will be discussing more of what is coming in Operation Overhaul such as maps, UI and audio. The team has been busy working on getting things ready for the next playtest including fixing bugs, improving vehicle physics, tweaking weapons, and continuing to stress test audio systems. We don’t have any updates yet on exactly when the performance test will be, but we’ve been making great progress and will let you know as soon as we’re ready to share. Operation Overhaul Dev Blog #1: Memory leak, vehicle physics, ricochets

We want to give you all an update on what we’ve been working on since the playtest, which includes the memory leak, tracers, and vehicle physics. Plus we’ve got a new “ricochet” detail that we want to show off.

Memory Leak Update

We found that audio was the main cause of our memory leak in our last [c]playtest[/c]. We have been using Unity’s audio system and up until this point it has been working. However with Operation Overhaul’s amount of sounds we implemented and how they interact with each other, the system overwhelmed over time as more audio was played and cached. To remedy this, we have made the decision to switch everything over to FMOD Audio engine. Regarding the bullet tracers, we completely reworked them and are continuing to optimize them.

Our sound designer MF_Kitten can give a little more detail on why we made this decision:

When we started the audio side of the overhaul, we were doing our best to work within the constraints of the Unity audio engine. This included designing and programming custom playback systems for gunshots, explosions, HRTF spatial audio, etc.

The limitations we had with Unity audio finally hit us in the face during the first public playtest. The internal playtests with the team simply could not uncover the strain that 254 players worth of audio would put on player systems! We were profiling performance and watching closely, and indeed audio WAS the memory leak problem that slowed down all the playtesters' machines! (Yes, it happened to my PC too)

So the decision was made to leave Unity's default audio system behind and bring in some serious horsepower.

FMOD is a third party audio engine that has been used in many amazing games, from indie gems to heavy-hitting AAA. It's incredibly well optimized and well thought-out for all the specific gaming needs and scenarios that modern gaming requires.

After looking through the data from the playtest and deciding to implement FMOD, we worked hard and fast to get all the audio ported over and we’re making great progress.

We are making sure we leverage the power of FMOD to deliver a satisfying, immersive, and most importantly, CLEAR audio experience. We love the chaotic unpredictable pandemonium that is Battlebit, but we want to make sure the audio calls extra attention where our players actually need it, while making sure non-critical sounds hang back when they need to.

Even though the Unity’s audio system worked very well for us in the past, we needed something better suited for the demands of Operation Overhaul. We’ll be continuing work on the audio system until we have things working smoothly and ready for the performance playtest. We’ll also be adding in and refining distant gunshot sounds as well as vehicle sounds which we’ll be ready to share at a later date.

Vehicle Physics Rework

Another point of feedback from players in the playtest, and even in the current live build, is the vehicle physics. They can feel floaty and are pretty hard to control overall. It’s no doubt that vehicles play a major part in Battlebit transporting players and being used to assault and defend objectives, so we want to make sure we address this and that vehicles get the attention they need.

Vehicles will now feel like they have weight to them rather than zippy and floaty. This will be an iterative process and take a few passes, so we look forward to hearing your feedback on how it feels in the next open playtest.

WIP

Ricochet

We mentioned earlier how tracers had added to the performance issues, and while we were reworking the old visual bullet system, we found a curious opportunity to add a new particle effect with no performance impact. The new bullet impact sounds felt sort of off without an accompanying visual effect so we took this opportunity to implement a visual ricochet. This is purely a visual effect, bullets that ricochet will not damage or harm you. Each surface also has its own chance to ricochet with steel being the highest chance and dirt having almost no chance at all.

In addition to all this, we are still sorting out other smaller issues regarding the build as well as fixing things regarding player feedback from the previous playtest. We are working towards a performance playtest to ensure we have completely fixed the memory leak. Nov 29th Playtest Debrief

We want to start this off by thanking everyone who participated in this playtest! We gained some much needed feedback not only about the performance issues (more on that later) but as well as a lot of the changes we’ve done overall.

We received a great amount of feedback not only from our official feedback form but also from Reddit, Discord and Steam. We’ve been reading through all your comments, messages, survey results, and forum posts. The responses have been insightful to say the least, and each response is helping us further develop BattleBit into a game we all love and enjoy. The official survey has been especially helpful with collecting feedback we may otherwise have missed in the past. We definitely will be looking to run these more in our future open playtests to better understand player needs and wants.

Let’s go through some of the top takeaways from our test and talk about next steps. There’s also a few pain points we want to address regarding your feedback.

Performance

We had a great turnout of players, but unfortunately we ran into a massive issue: a memory leak. This impacted not only player performance but your overall experience of what Operation Overhaul is. Many players reported playing with a mere 5-10 frames, some of you saying it felt like a slideshow or PowerPoint even. While the playtest was indeed a huge help in finding this issue and getting your general feedback, we know it was frustrating to play through and it's clear we have more to do.

From the very beginning of this Overhaul journey, as some of you may recall, audio was and has been our primary focus. We introduced a massive amount of new audio to the game from gunshots, gear, vehicles, ambiance and even how sound interacts with you. This led to an overload on people’s RAM and CPU causing the annoying memory leak a lot of you experienced.

We will be doing more focused and dedicated performance tests through Discord with a “Performance Tester” role to help resolve this issue. Anyone can sign up for this by going to our Discord, going to “Channels and Roles” and selecting the Performance Tester role. You can expect a ping whenever we do a test, but be aware that these tests will be at random times with the focus being strictly on performance, not gameplay or otherwise. One server will be open for each test so slots will be limited. BattleBit is designed to run on a wide variety of hardware specs, and we need your help making sure it runs the best that it can.

TTK

A majority of our feedback was about the changes we made to TTK. Some said it was too high/long, others described it as sluggish and said they had to lead their shots too much. This whole experience of TTK was unfortunately affected by the performance issue. Even if you yourself weren’t experiencing bad performance, others shooting at you could have been. However, that's not really the whole problem, and we’re still going to be making tweaks.

We set out to improve TTK because what we have in the live build is, well, very fast. Players new and veteran alike sometimes get “1 framed” (or killed in what feels like a single frame) by the enemy and are left wondering “how did I die?” or “how was that even possible?”. We want people to have a reasonable amount of time to react to being shot at without shooting itself feeling sluggish or like you’re slinging foam darts at your target. We'll be doing a pass on all the weapons to ensure their TTK better aligns with these goals.

Snow

Another topic was the amount of falling snow on maps. Players reported it being way too much and distracting, making visibility tough and even tougher in helicopters. We’ve gone ahead and reduced the amount of snow to alleviate this issue. We’ll see how this tests of course, and welcome your feedback, but for right now at least this feels like a good level to us.

Tracers

Lastly, we have the tracers. Players reported and even sent screenshots of what looked like massive amounts of lasers. We believe this was due to the poor FPS players were experiencing which in turn made the game feel like a laser show. Once we have the performance issues squared away, we hope this resolves itself, but we’re going to keep an eye on it after the performance fix to be sure it’s not as excessive as it is now.

Conclusion

These are just some of the things regarding our existing issues and your feedback. Right now we are mostly focused on fixing the performance side of things as well as finding that middle ground for TTK. There are still plenty of other areas we are looking to improve based on the feedback we got from this test such as the ping system, field points and night time gameplay. Until we have a firmer idea of what those are going to look like, we don’t want to go into too much detail about those just yet.

Our current plan is to run those performance playtests with you to help us fix the memory leak and framerate issues. Once that’s sorted, we’ll do our next open playtest like this one to continue tweaking and gathering gameplay feedback. We don’t have any word on when the first performance playtest will be, but stay tuned and watch for pings within that role to stay updated.

‘Operation Overhaul’ Playtest Now Live

UPDATE:The playtest is now over! We didn't expect such an overwhelming amount of players, thank you so much for bearing with the performance issues and getting us all the data we need to resolve these issues. Stay tuned for more info on future testing. Remember to fill out the survey!

Operation Overhaul’s first playtest is now live! Jump in game now or within the next four hours and test out completely reworked audio and visuals, as well as a revamped time to kill, UI improvements, and more. We will have more tests (times TBD) during weekends after this one. For this first test these are the areas where we are looking for your feedback:

New map Mesa, night lighting, redesigned layout on Valley, Kodiak improvements, updated prop art
Audio rework that improves weapon/explosive sounds and increases awareness for enemy footsteps and gunshots
Weapon rework including time to kill adjustments, class availability, attachment stat changes, and gadget tweaks
Movement rework including new stand-to-prone and crouch-to-prone animations, mid-air turning sensitivity, increased vaulting speed, and new “tac sprint” feature (faster sprint usable for a short period)

To make this process as easy as possible, we’ve added in game buttons that will take you directly to a bug submission form or feedback form. They are located in the main menu, end of round screen, and pause screen.

Playtest FAQ

How long is the test?

The playtest session will last four hours.

Which maps will be available?

You'll be playing on Kodiak, Mesa, and Valley, with map changes determined through map voting.

Can I choose the time of day?

No, only day time. However we will manually switch some servers to night time.

What weapons and gadgets are available?

All weapons and gadgets are fully unlocked. However, each weapon starts with roughly half of its attachments unlocked, which is about the equivalent of 100 regular kills. You can continue to get kills to unlock more attachments.

How do I join a match?

Use the server browser. Quick Match and the Shooting Range are inaccessible during this test.

Will this affect my live stats?

No. Your live stats will not be impacted by anything you do in this playtest.

Will my progression be saved if I disconnect and rejoin?

No. Playtest progression is not retained if you leave and rejoin a server.

How can I submit feedback or report bugs?

The game includes in-game buttons that allow you to easily submit feedback or report bugs at any time.

Will my keybinds be transferred?

You will have to rebind your keys as they are not able to be transferred to this playtest.

What’s next?

Following the playtest’s conclusion, we’ll review your feedback forms, bug report forms, Discord feedback, Reddit, and Steam Discussions to see how you’re liking everything and what needs improvement. You are also free to record, stream, screenshot, and share any game content on various platforms. Be sure to fill out the forms, and we’ll see you in game!

Important Hardware Note

As a result of Overhaul’s graphical and technical improvements, the min spec for BattleBit Remastered has changed:

GPU requirements went up due to the new graphical upgrades
CPU increased because of the expanded audio and destruction systems
Memory usage also rose due to the large amount of new audio and the optimized destruction and lighting features.

Our intention was to keep things at the same level as before, but that ended not being a realistic goal.

EDIT: We are aware of an ongoing performance issue and memory leak and we are actively monitoring the situation. If you're experiencing these issues, restarting the game may help. Some of the audio systems and destruction are spiking for a lot of players. We know it’s a pain, but rest assured we are actively collecting very useful in game data for these issues. We appreciate your patience and feedback during this playtest.

'Operation Overhaul’ Playtest on Nov 29th

A whole suite of changes including time to kill refinement, graphic reworks, UI updates, quality of life improvements, all new sounds, and more are almost ready to playtest. Here’s a heads up ahead of time on what’s coming.

How to download

Anyone who owns BattleBit Remastered will be able to play in the playtest by switching the game’s version to the “beta - Operation Overhaul test” version via Steam. This will download and update the game to the Overhaul version so it launches normally through Steam. Once the test is concluded, you will need to switch back to and redownload the regular version of the game to play on the live version servers. We will provide a guide on how to switch to and from Overhaul on the day of the first test. The playtest build will be available to download right when the test begins, so if you have slow internet, be sure you start your download right away.

What’s next?

We will have more information available the day of the test. Normally this is the part where we say “something something soon™”, but this time all we want to say is thank you for sticking with us. We know it’s been a long time coming, and we’ll see you November 29th.

Upcoming 'Operation Overhaul' Playtest

We’ve been hard at work on a big update, Operation Overhaul, for the past year and a half, and it’s almost ready to playtest. The update includes a ton of changes to gameplay, levels, UI, QOL, balancing, graphics, and many other areas.

We know it’s been a long time, and we know that we haven’t shared much for the vast majority of that time. We're in a position now where we finally feel things are ready to be put in your hands for testing, and we hope you're happy with what we've been cooking up.

First test is targeted for end of November 2025 (next month).
There will be multiple tests, all of which will be scheduled for weekends.
Accessed via the Steam beta branch of BBR (a guide will be provided, don’t worry it’s pretty straightforward).
This is a technical playtest, so expect bugs and iterations.
This will be our first opportunity to hear your feedback on Operation Overhaul.

Here’s a peek at what Operation Overhaul looks like in our current development build.

We also want to give a heads up that we just pushed a patch to fix a security vulnerability[www.cve.org] with our game engine, Unity. We have no evidence of anyone being affected or impacted, and it’s also been addressed by Steam and Windows[msrc.microsoft.com]. However, as with other games on the market right now, we wanted to be safe and address this on our end too.

Feedback Update

Just a quick heads up, applications are open for another week. You can find that here: Feedback Application[forms.gle]

We would also like to clear some things up pertaining to this.

First, this application does not mean this is the one and only way we are going to get feedback. Social platforms are still a great place to provide feedback, and we intend to be more actively engaged there. We will be posting more official discussion threads before and after updates, dev casts, etc. This is something we should have been doing more frequently as it’s an acknowledgment that we are actively listening to you.

Secondly, the Feedback Group is more of a focus group. Members of the group will be asked specific questions by the devs that come up in development, better informing decision making during the process. This is different than our social platforms like Discord and Reddit, where we look for new ideas from the community as well as bugs and issues. We intend to frequently rotate this group of people to allow members, of all of our communities, to feel equally heard. We learned from our mistakes with the previous feedback team we setup and are looking to improve the way we run it.

We understand that in game feedback would be a great feature, as our players well, literally are playing the game. We do not have this at the time. It’s something we have acknowledged and are working towards. It’s something we learned and as the game continues to evolve, we also are learning new ways to improve many things, not just sound.

Lastly, we understand this update has taken some time. Players have been divided for months about the sound update. The amount of feedback and issues we have received has been acknowledged. We are actively working on this. Why it was not reverted could be pointed to many of reasons. But at the end of the day, it’s something we learned and are improving on.

In conclusion, we are a small development team, trying to make a fun and interactive video game. We’re doing our best to learn and improve everyday with how we interact, communicate, and update our game. We are still in Early Access and the game will frequently see updates that may seem dramatic maybe even outright crazy to some.

To be clear, these aren’t new rules - we’ve always had these behavior expectations in place. These guidelines were put together to be a more approachable way for the community to understand these expectations, in contrast to the legal jargon of the EULA.

While these guidelines are nothing new, we do hope you take a moment to read them through. Our goal in this is to be more transparent and communicative about our safety practices, and we thank you for the feedback that inspired us to create this.

2024 and Battlebit

Apologies for the late update. 2023 was an exciting year for us entering Early Access, but it was also a massive learning year for us as well. As we entered the new year we’ve been hard at work with a lot of new processes and updates.

Roadmap update:
BattleBit Remastered has chosen to stray away from using a roadmap at this time. This decision allows the development team the flexibility to address emerging priorities, respond to player feedback promptly, and make dynamic adjustments without being constrained by a predetermined timeline. We are working on a way to create a more balanced expectation and better transparency between the community and Developers.

Internal Restructure:
To ensure that BattleBit Remastered continues to deliver an unparalleled gaming experience, we have been undergoing an internal restructuring this month. This revamp is aimed at optimizing our processes, enhancing communication, and fostering a more collaborative and friendly environment.

Improved Weapon Skin Customization:
Prepare to take customization to the next level! We've overhauled the weapon skin customization system, allowing you to fine-tune every aspect of your arsenal. The enhanced customization options will empower you to craft weapons that suit your playstyle or personality perfectly. Get ready to customize weapons to make them uniquely yours. From ghillie skins down to charms, the possibilities are endless! ⁠

Relaunch of Devcast:

The Devcast is back, and it's better than ever! Join us as we relaunch our developer podcast series, offering you an insider's look into the creation of BattleBit Remastered. Every two weeks, discover the stories behind the scenes, learn about the challenges we've overcome, and gain insights into the creative process for updates and changes. Join us for laughs, stories, and maybe even a few secrets behind the design processes that go into building the game.

New Community Manager:

With a deep understanding of the BattleBit game, the community and a commitment to fostering a positive and engaging environment. Making sure your voice is heard and your ideas get the spotlight. New Update Schedule:
We're introducing and working on a revamped update schedule. We learned from the past year that pushing updates out weekly wasn't the best option, as we had little to no time to actually test them out properly. With that being said, expect a more streamlined update process with content, optimizations, and surprises. We are already working on new ways to collect feedback from those in-game as well as storing more stats to better help us understand our player base. This in turn provides you with a dynamic gaming experience that keeps you anticipating what's coming next. Our goal this year is to create a steady stream of new features and improvements to keep BattleBit Remastered fresh, exciting and appealing. Though this implies a decrease in frequency, this will give us the opportunity to better test our updates/patches and figure out issues and bugs that may arise before pushing them onto the live servers. This upcoming update is no exception.

We've experienced highs and lows, learning from every change, update, and interaction along the way. 2023 marked a fantastic year for BattleBit, and our aim is to elevate the experience even further in 2024.
