Far Cry:
Hello! Can you introduce yourself and the DiffView team to the Far Cry community?

Jirka Klemenc:
DiffView is a small amateur production team from the Czech Republic. We shoot videos based on different computer games especially for the YouTube audience. I started DiffView 3 years ago, and I have the roles of main producer, director, and cameraman. The team includes three other people, and we usually look among our friends for actors, actresses, and helping hands for each new project.


FC:
DiffView has created several video game–based films. What was it about Far Cry Primal that made you want to base a film in Oros?

JK:
Before we start the preparation for a game movie, it is essential that one of us already has some kind of a special relationship to it. For Far Cry Primal specifically, this was me: I love animals, beautiful nature, and, of course, action. Far Cry Primal is extraordinarily well-made, looks great visually, and almost begs to have movies made for it.


FC:
The filming location was beautiful! Could you share with our fans where you filmed?

JK:
It was shot at one of the prettiest places in the Czech Republic - Adršpach, also called the Adršpach Rock Town. When we need a gorgeous location like this, we don’t have to fly over to the US, as we have something this unique right here at our feet.

FC:
What were the most challenging aspects of making this film?

JK:
Definitely props and costumes that we had to make ourselves. And also health and safety of the actors and stunt people. For example, we had to make a piece of foam look like a rock that you can then safely hit someone in the head with and so on.

FC:
What sort of research went into the creation of the video?

JK:
Lots and lots of actual playing of the game. Honestly, I have to confess that that’s probably my favorite thing about our work.


FC:
How do you approach your gaming films differently than you do other projects?

JK:
The biggest advantage in making game videos over other types is that the audience usually already knows the game, and so you don’t need to waste time with introductions of the characters and the plot. We can dive straight into action, as there’s not a whole lot of time to spare in short films on YouTube.

FC:
Do you have advice for other fans who would like to create video content?

JK:
I guess just unleash your fantasy! But also don’t overestimate your capabilities. Only take a challenge not too big for you to handle. And then keep moving forward inch by inch!

FC:
For our gear and tech fans, what camera(s) did you film with, and what editing software did you use?

JK:
We used the Black Magic Production Cinema Camera 4K with the SIGMA Art 18-35 f1.8 and Tramon 24-70 f2.8 lenses. For the POV shots, it was, of course, the GoPro 4 Black. The DJI Phantom 2 as our drone and Tascam DR-100 and Rode NTG1 for sound. Editing then took place in Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects, the final color grading in DaVinci Resolve.

We reached out to (one of the few) Far Cry Primal player who finished the game in the highest difficulty setting: Survivor mode + Permadeath activated (= only 1 life, no respawn).

How did you feel during your progression in Far Cry Primal’s Survivor mode with Permadeath activated?

I was scared...

Every single percentage was a huge achievement for me. Every step I made in #Oros felt like reality. I checked areas twice, thrice, and more before taking a step forward. I realized soon (at approximately 2% progression) that I was the prey and not the super-imba-hero anymore.

But because my first try of Survivor mode plus Permadeath was after 130 hours of regular gameplay, I already knew what could happen. I tried Survivor mode three times before finishing it. For the Survivor mode plus Permadeath activated run, it took me approximately 16 tries!

Impressive. Congrats on completing it! Can you introduce yourself to the community?

Hi, my name is Pan and I am a 40-year-old passionate PC gamer from Germany living in Dubai. I have been into gaming – especially RPGs – since the dark ages. It all started with pen and paper games (AD&D, RuneQuest, etc.). My first MMRPG was Lord British’s Ultima Online in the ‘90s. Great times – I remember paying 100 EUR one month for a dial-in connection; my parents almost killed me!

Ok so what suggestions would you give to someone who wants to try Survivor mode + Permadeath?

• Slow and careful! You are not the hero but the prey in this mode!
  
• Use every possible easy sidequest to get points and add perks; they will save your life later!
  
• Take your time; double check places with your Owl.
  
• When you reach the point when you fight Batari, use Berserk bombs with your upgraded Hunter’s belt on her fighters.
  
• Never forget that you can die every single moment in Survivor, and if this happens put the game aside for a few hours and start all over after a coffee break (happened to me many times).

What were your biggest challenges / scariest moments?

The fight against Batari! That moment when the song “The Wolf” (Fever Ray) starts playing…oh god, my heart starts beating faster even now.

Second, I would say the first time you meet a sabretooth tiger in Sayla’s quest (it killed me three times!).

What weapons did you use most in this mode?

Well, I mainly used the longbow from the moment it was available with Jayma. This weapon saved my *** so many times. I upgraded it ASAP.

Next was the spear for close-distance throws. I always avoided close enemy contact in that brutal mode. The good thing was that you could quickly upgrade your melee weapons and the hybrid (spear), while with the longbow you had to wait much longer for a full upgrade with Jayma.

I know some Permadeath Survivor players avoided the multiple-kill perk upgrade. But I used it. It was important in some situations, especially when there was no way to avoid confrontation, like in Ull’s caves.

But still, my best weapon was the sneaky takedown/stealthkill...as you can see in the image below (look at the stat "# Stealth Kills").

What about the perks, which ones did you use to help your progression? Which ones are important?

Oh, this is easy...to survive in Survivor/Permadeath you will need all the life, stamina and healing you can get!

So prioritize perks that increase:
a) your life.
b) your stamina (to run away).
c) healing skills.

I put all my effort toward increasing these perks in Survivor/Permadeath from the very beginning, so I was even saving points to increase my life bar to the max (three bars only) after saving Karoosh.

Ok and what were your biggest achievements and wow moments?

And also the Dream "Batari’s Fear" where you shoot the moon! :)

Which beasts did you use most during your adventure?

In Survivor/Permadeath mode it was the black tiger – I was too scared to try to tame the sabretooth or the cave bear. It was very difficult to bring him down to 50% to tame him, a lesson I learned in prior attempts in this mode.

Thanks for all the useful advice! Any other last words?

Thanks to the Dev team for this game, because frankly speaking, Far Cry Primal Survivor/Permadeath was the most intense gaming experience I’ve ever had. Also, thanks for the #Wenja language, which is the most amazing language, created by two great linguists (the Byrds)! The Far Cry community team was amazed when they spotted this awesome Batari cosplay. We reached out to its creator to ask her some questions and pick her nerdy brain.

Hi there, can you present yourself to the Far Cry community?

Hi! I'm Scarlett from Scarlett Costuming and Art (FB link)[www.facebook.com], but my real name is Emilie.
I'm a Danish cosplayer and biologist in the making. I'm currently writing my Master's thesis on ancient DNA from humans from the Ice Age, and that might be why I fell in love with Far Cry Primal – as a scientist I'm very interested in ancient people and their way of life, so when I saw that Far Cry Primal was a thing, I added it straight to my games list. I watched my brother play Far Cry 3, but I only just joined the Far Cry ranks when I got into Far Cry Primal.

That’s pretty unique! And what about your cosplaying skills?

I have been cosplaying for two years! I'm still quite new in the cosplay community and I'm still learning with every costume, but I love it. It's such a creative hobby and I love to create wearable art – it's the best! I also love being on stage and performing, and I have represented Denmark at EuroCosplay[www.eurocosplay.com] in London, which was an amazing experience! I could go on and on about cosplay as a hobby, it's so much fun. I have been attending contests for as long as I have been cosplaying, and just recently I won first at Dreamhack Summer 2016 in Sweden (picture credits: Danarki).

Wow, congratulations! How was your experience of these competitions?

Thank you! I wore Amiri of the Six Bears from Pathfinder for the finals at EuroCosplay 2015, and I have had such a great reaction from fans of Pathfinder. I play Dungeons & Dragons myself, so it was so cool to actually make one of the iconic characters in real life. Only a few people have recognized the cosplay, but some did when I wore her at Dreamhack Winter 2015 and won second place. I love bonding over a character like that when meeting fans of the franchise! (I have attached two pictures of Amiri, if you want to see that, too! It's the barbarian lady.)
I wore the Empress of Bones from Asura Online for the competition at Dreamhack Summer 2016, and the judges were so nice at the pre-judging. I wasn't able to wear the bone wings at the pre-judging, but I wore them on stage for my small performance, and they said they loved it, so I couldn't be happier about it. :) It's a tough costume to wear, but so worth it!

Ok, that’s pretty impressive. But why Batari?

I chose Batari because of her fierceness and her amazing design. I have always loved big headdresses, and when I saw her in game, my initial reaction was "gotta cosplay her." Then I saw she wasn't wearing a top and I knew I had to tweak the design a bit. ;) She's a tough and cold-hearted woman, but I really love how she doesn't bow down to anyone and that she's a very strong woman. She's got her priorities a bit mixed up and she rules with an iron fist, but hey, we can all have a bad day.

In short: she's a very well-written character and she looks so majestic and imposing that I couldn't resist. I usually gravitate towards dark and strong characters.

And how long did it take you to get the final version of the costume?

I finished the cosplay in six days. I made the decision quite late before the deadline, so I had to work on the cosplay a lot, but I didn't mind. I was trying out new materials and techniques, and I really love how it turned out, so I had fun!

What were the most difficult parts?

The headdress and the wig were quite challenging. I'm a blonde and I needed to make sure the dreads would cover my hair and not break the illusion. So I made a fake hairline of dreads I back-combed myself. The biggest issue ended up being the sheer weight of the headdress and dreads since everything had to stay on my head by itself. I solved this with multiple hairclips (ow!) and elastic bands. I also glued down the hairline with some prosthetic skin glue to make sure it didn't slide back.

What material did you use for it?

The headdress is made from beach mats! I bought some very cheap ones and painted liquid latex and glue on one side to make sure the woven straw didn't simply fall apart when I cut them into strips. Then I "braided" the strips of straw into the texture from the game (I used a lot of screenshots from the game and the concept art to make sure I replicated everything as closely as possible to the source material) and glued it onto a base I made from thermoplastic. Later I wove string onto the back part of the headdress and weathered the whole thing. I did the same for the bracers and shin guards. The rest of the costume was leather I had lying around from previous cosplays.

Do you have any advice for other Far Cry fans who’d like to start their own cosplay?

These kinds of cosplays are amazing to craft! You don't need to be precise and have a perfect technique or perfect craftsmanship; the materials are all natural, and everything is rugged and dirty. It's really interesting to create something new that has to look old – so my advice would be to weather everything thoroughly to make it appear old. It's all about creative solutions like using coffee or tea to make leathers look old and stained, or using a wash of acrylics to make the straw look a bit dirty and worn by time. Weathering is everything in cosplays like these. :)

What did you think about the Wenja language that we used for the game?

I loved the Wenja language! Very guttural and primal: it seems very plausible for it to sound like that! I would not be very qualified to comment on the correctness, though. ;) I work with extracting ancient DNA from petrous bones (ear bones) and mapping the genes of the people in the population. Super interesting and very nerdy!

Would you like to share anything else about this project or the game?

Keep making games like these, lol. It makes my nerdy scientist heart happy.
