I've discovered this gem very recently, despite its age. It's an incredible game: it's brutally intense, it brillantly combines RTS and tower defence, it's got a large array of viable and different strategies and, with it, a large variety of enemy encounters that'll keep the game interesting. Except for the starting assault rifles, the weapons the Marines use are brutal and devastate the enemy in a satisfying manner, and so do the different turret options.

The game has two downsides, however. First, the maps are usually small and simplistic, such that few of them stand out. Second, the game has somewhat low replayability, mostly because of the prominence of its tower defence side. At this price point, however, none of these matter, and I can only recommend this game.

Infested Planet, developed and published by Rocket Bear Games, is a real-time strategy game that narrows its focus to one idea and executes it with impressive clarity: controlling a small, adaptable force against an overwhelming and constantly evolving enemy. Rather than following the traditional RTS blueprint of base building and large-scale resource management, it strips the genre down to its tactical core, emphasizing positioning, quick decision-making, and the ability to respond under pressure. The result is a game that feels more immediate and intense than many of its contemporaries, trading breadth for a tightly tuned gameplay loop.

At the center of the experience is the player’s squad of marines, tasked with reclaiming territory from an alien infestation that spreads across the map in a network of hives. Missions revolve around pushing forward, capturing key points, and destroying these sources of enemy production while defending newly secured areas from counterattacks. What makes this engaging is the constant pressure: enemies do not wait for you to prepare. They surge forward in large numbers, forcing you to stay mobile and actively manage your units rather than relying on static defenses alone. Even a moment of inattention can lead to losing ground, and recovering from those setbacks becomes part of the challenge.

The game’s most distinctive feature is its mutation system, which ensures that no two encounters feel exactly the same. As you progress through a mission, the alien forces evolve, gaining new abilities that directly impact how you approach the situation. Some mutations increase enemy speed or durability, while others introduce entirely new behaviors that can disrupt established strategies. This dynamic element forces players to remain flexible, constantly reassessing their tactics rather than settling into a single effective approach. It transforms each mission into a shifting puzzle where adaptation is just as important as execution.

Supporting this is a resource system that encourages experimentation rather than punishing it. Players earn points that can be spent on upgrades, reinforcements, and defensive options, and these investments can be adjusted on the fly. This flexibility allows for rapid changes in strategy, making it possible to respond immediately to new threats or unexpected developments. Instead of committing to a long-term plan that may or may not work, the game invites you to adjust continuously, creating a sense of fluidity that keeps the action engaging.

The campaign mode introduces these systems gradually, offering a series of missions that increase in complexity while expanding the player’s understanding of the mechanics. While the narrative itself is minimal, serving mainly as a backdrop for the conflict, it does enough to provide context without distracting from the gameplay. Additional modes and challenges extend the experience, offering variations that test different aspects of the player’s skills and encourage replayability. Even though the structure is straightforward, the variability introduced by the mutation system keeps the experience from feeling entirely predictable.

Visually, Infested Planet adopts a clean, functional style that prioritizes clarity. The top-down perspective allows players to track large numbers of enemies without confusion, and the simplified design ensures that important information remains easy to read even during chaotic moments. While the presentation lacks the detail or flair of more visually ambitious titles, it serves the gameplay effectively. Sound design reinforces the intensity of combat, with clear audio cues that help players stay aware of what is happening across the battlefield.

There are, however, limitations to this focused approach. The game’s relentless pace can feel overwhelming, especially for players who prefer a more methodical or slower-paced strategy experience. Some missions demand repeated attempts, and the combination of high enemy numbers and evolving mechanics can occasionally create situations that feel unfair rather than challenging. Additionally, while the core loop is strong, it does not change dramatically over time, which can lead to a sense of repetition during longer sessions.

Despite these drawbacks, Infested Planet stands out for how confidently it executes its central idea. It offers a different take on real-time strategy, one that values adaptability and immediacy over complexity and scale. By concentrating on a smaller set of mechanics and refining them, it delivers a gameplay experience that feels cohesive and engaging from start to finish. The tension created by its constant pressure and evolving threats gives each mission a sense of urgency that is difficult to replicate in more traditional RTS games.

In the end, it is a game that rewards players who are willing to think quickly, adjust their plans, and embrace the chaos rather than try to control it completely. It may not have the expansive systems or narrative depth of larger strategy titles, but it succeeds in creating a distinct and memorable experience built around its core mechanics.
